The Mexico Mission Committee needs your help! We will be participating for the fourth year in GOLD (Gifts of Love in December). If you have not heard or know little about it, read on to learn.
Puerto Moreles, Mexico is a small fishing village. The area is extremely economically depressed. The Mexican government provide no type of aid to the people. Unwed mothers and abandoned wives are prevalent. Many families live in stick houses made from sticks bound together with no indoor plumbing facilities. The closest hospital is 40 minutes away in Cancun. the village lacks desperately in medical attention.
Last year a few members of our church and some others in the community participated in a mission trip to Puerto Moreles. Volunteers under the guidance of the Mexico Mission Team purchased gifts, candy, toys, hygiene items and medical supplies to take to the needy of the village. These items were handed out at a Christmas party. An estimated 2400 children came to play games and receive gifts from Santa.
Upon hearing about the medical services, the Helping Hands Sunday School class committed to providing some regular financial aid to the local doctor. The class and personal donations contributed have enabled him to relocate to a suitable facility and buy basic medical supplies. Seeking donations for additional medical supplies is an ongoing project for the class.
Some may ask, "Why go to Mexico? We should give more here in Gilmer County." We could do that, but there are no boundaries on need. There are different kinds of aid to our local residents. These is always extra help at Christmas time for needy families. Several groups collect toys for the children. The people living in this tiny fishing village have no one. This mission provides an opportunity to raise the awareness in our church to needs outside our conference and country.
Everyone in the church can participate in some capacity. We invite you to be on the committee, help collect items needed, donated items, or make a cash donation. Contact any committee member for more information. The church office can give you names and telephone numbers. Please pray for GOLD.
